Aluminum is a popular food packaging material used with many types of foods. It is often preferred over options like glass, plastic, or paper because it is endlessly recyclable, lightweight, and shatterproof.

Aluminum offers these benefits:

• Environmental sustainability. Aluminum can be recycled over and over. Recycling aluminum also saves energy – it takes 95% less energy to recycle aluminum than it does to produce it from raw materials.
• Flexibility. Aluminum is safe and effective for use with many types of food products, including solids and liquids. Dairy products, containers for processed foods, and pet food products are commonly packaged in aluminum.
• Barrier protection. Aluminum packaging protects contents from light, moisture, and oxidation. Even thin aluminum foil is an effective barrier for preserving quality, safety, and aroma.
• Lightweight. Because aluminum packaging is lightweight, it is inexpensive to ship in bulk quantities.

Polyethylene terephthalate, or more commonly PETE or PET, is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer with high strength and stiffness. It also blocks gases and moisture and has excellent electrical insulating properties.

PETE packaging offers these benefits:

• Shatterproof. PETE is durable and can withstand considerable impact without breaking or cracking. This strength minimizes damage during storage, shipping, and when filled with products on store shelves.
• Non-reactive. PETE does not react when in contact with water or food, which preserves both food and packaging quality and safety.
• High strength-to-weight ratio. PETE food packaging materials are very strong, while also being lightweight.
• Clarity. PETE material is usually clear, so packages made with it provide exceptional product visibility for consumers.
• Microwave-safe. Some PETE products are approved for use in a microwave. However, it is important to note whether the material is labeled “microwave-safe” prior to reheating or cooking.
